Wow, I knew nothing about it. So after "googling" many things regarding fondant. Whether to buy pre-made or pre-made & pre-rolled, or to make from scratch, I decided based on time, I would buy pre-made, but not pre-rolled fondant. I rolled some out and cut out a variety of different size stars. I then dyed the rest of what I would use red. However as I kneaded the dye into the fondant I decided to allow a natural color swirl occur giving it a natural "marble" texture. I felt that touch gave a very simple cake a much added touch to make it seem much more than what it was.
After baking the two round layers of the cake. The bottom larger than the top, I used regular frosting to frost the cake first as I wanted to give a more fluffier feel to the cake even though fondant would be covering it. I felt doing that gave a more round smooth texture to the cake.
Before adding the second layer, I decided to place the white stars on the cake in a pattern so that some would peek through under the top layer.
I then frosted the top layer for the same smooth effect and then covered that with the fondant as well. I added the rest of the stars and added some writing.
For my first fondant, I was quite please with how it came out!
